Michael F. Roizen, M.D., is a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Williams College, Alpha Omega Alpha graduate of the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine and board certified in both Anesthesiology and Internal Medicine. He chaired the University of Chicago (16 years) and Cleveland Clinic (3 years) Departments of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Management. Dr. Roizen co-founded RealAge (which was sold in 2007 to Hearst, Inc.), and chairs its Scientific Advisory Board. He is 64 calendar years of age, but his RealAge is 44.3.
Dr. Roizen's passion for wellness started with his desire to decrease complication rates preoperatively. His work led him to efforts in making patients ten years younger, physiologically, through taking simple preventive maneuvers in the two weeks prior to and following surgery – like walking, diet changes, DHA, aspirin, statins, meditation and guided imagery, etc. He passionately believes that lifestyle changes are a way to slow the aging clock.
In parallel, Dr. Roizen chaired the American Society of Anesthesiologists committee on practice guidelines for almost ten years. As President of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists and an Internist, he brokered the marriage between Anesthesiologists, Pediatricians, and Cardiologists into the formulation of a common practice guideline for Echocardiography certification. To date, Dr. Roizen combines his passion for prevention and wellness with his practice guideline expertise through his writing and speaking on the importance of lifestyle changes to health in several public forums. His work has reached the number one New York Times Bestsellers' list, is shared and followed in several companies, foundations and through five Public Broadcasting System "PBS" specials.
Dr. Roizen is a past chair of the Food and Drug Administration advisory committee, a former editor for six medical journals, and has more than 165 peer reviewed and over 200 editorials and review papers. His additional professional accolades include receipt of 13 U.S. and many foreign patents; co-developer of a drug now sold in all developed countries and more. He has founded or co-founded 11 companies, eight of which are still in existence or have been sold to other companies. In 2007, Dr. Roizen was named the Chief Wellness Officer for the Cleveland Clinic and Chair of its Wellness Institute – the first such position in a major healthcare institution in the United States.
Dr. Roizen chairs a non-profit foundation sponsored by the FDA and IARS called SAFEKIDS Anesthesia, receiving many awards for his work in anesthesia, critical care, pain management and rehabilitation medicine including initial pioneering work on determinants of outcomes of CV Patients, echo and echo standards, practice guidelines involving multiple societies, evidence based preoperative assessment to alter outcomes, and drug development. This work led to his creation of a metric for health, entitled RealAge.
He and Dr. Mehmet Oz have authored nine New York Times bestsellers between them, and three separately, including four #1 New York Times bestsellers. These literary works have been translated into more than 44 languages, including RealAge, Are You As Young As You Can Be, YOU: The Owner's Manual, YOU: On A Diet, the Owner's Manual for Waist Management, and YOU: Staying Young, the Owner's Manual for Extending Your Warranty.
Drs. Roizen and Oz write a column syndicated to 71 newspapers daily and to five magazines monthly (received an Elle in 2008, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from Books for Better Health in 2009). Dr. Roizen can be heard daily on a one hour radio show, and weekly on a two hour syndicated show. He has appeared on Oprah, Dr. Oz, Good Morning America, Today, and Canada AM more than 18 times per program. Dr. Roizen continues to hold leadership positions in four non-profit foundations including SAFEKIDS Anesthesia, HealthCorps®, Hospice Foundation of CNY, and Clinical Practice Enhancement and ARF.
